Footballer of the Week
Janelle Traynor (nee Smith) is a fantastic choice for FOW of the week as she has had a role with all aspect of soccer: a player, a coach, a mentor, BC Soccer facilitator and a community leader for females in soccer. Janelle’s passion for the game has seen her suit up as a UVic Vikes player, LIWSA women’s Premier soccer teams and also for the Victoria Highlanders women. With a bit of time off to have two children, she is now back again playing for Gorge’s Over30A team. Janelle is a past VI Wave coach for a few girls teams and is currently a BC Soccer Community facilitator – so she is passing on her experience to many coaches at the community recreational level (male and female). She now also gets to coach her daughters’ u4 group of kids – focusing on physical literacy and encouraging parents’ involvement in physical activity.
One program Gorge and Janelle are proud of is the Spring Active Start program – a physical literacy program Gorge provides to 3/4/5 years olds for free. This program allows her to “coach” these small children in physical literacy movements and social interaction; AND she also gets to mentor 8-10 female youth coaches during the program. Many of whom have volunteered their time for a number of Gorge’s other programs. She truly is a champion for females in the sport of soccer. Gorge President Brad Hlasny noted “Janelle is a fantastic role model for all young females. She plays, coaches and lives life with passion. She cares about females in the sport of soccer and is always working hard to support the young players and coaches in the club”.
Player, coach, mentor, community leader, wife/partner and most importantly … a mom of two healthy toddlers. Congratulations to Janelle – this week’s Footballer Of the Week.
