Darian Achurch – Cowichan Div 1

This Week’s Footballer of the Week is Darian Achurch from VISL’s Div 1 Cowichan FC.
Darian is the squad’s Keeper, and has been an integral piece of the teams attempt to win their 5th straight Garrison Cup as division champions.

In a 10 day span, while getting makeup games in, Darian allowed 1 goal in 3 games. 2 games were facing the next placed team in the division, and another in Jackson Cup. In 1 of those games, he was the clear MVP. He has continued to come up with big save after big save – and has posted 7 shutouts in league play, and 1 in Jackson Cup.

Darian comes from a family of Keepers as his dad Dave was a longtime VISL Keeper with Duncan claiming the Lou DeCosta Top Goalie Year award in years 1970 as well as 1972. Darian’s voyage into the VISL did not start as a Keeper though. He was a striker for approximately 8 years in Divisions 1 & 2 for Cowichan. He has been a Cowichan Keeper for the last 9 years, the most recent 2 with the Division 1 team.

When checking in with the Cowichan Stats Dept – they claim his best memory was several years back when he scored a hat-trick vs Saltspring FC, then posted a shutout the following week vs Nanaimo Utd.

Fast forward some years, Darian is a teacher, husband, and dad as well.  He loves volleyball, is into fantasy football, and is a decent golfer. He also has several other skills. He is VERY frugal, and it would appear that it is mistaken as being cheap by some. Darian is also a good eater, and has mastered the art of eating in a hurry.  He loves his bribes from the coaching staff as it usually involved some sort of candy or certificate for Mr Mikes. Speaking of which, he is very good at monitoring his daughters Halloween candy intake and prevents her from getting cavities. Another thing Darian is very conscious of – the environment. That is quite clear as he is constantly asking for rides.

An interesting fact about Darian – he does yoga before every game with a certain defender.

It would appear that the only area he needs to work on – telling jokes.

Joking aside – a quality teammate and loves to stay focused on the game at hand.

Congrats on being selected Footballer of the Week.
