Jesse Rice

This week’s selection is from the Fernwood Football Association in the VISL, playing in Division 1, Jesse Rice.

Jesse has been with the VISL on and off for the past 15 years. Besides Fernwood; he has played with JDF, Sagres, Saanich Braves, Esquimalt Nation, and Prospect Lake.

Jesse’s natural position is a striker. Back in his youth days, that is one of his best memories – travelling to Germany, Holland, and Belgium playing against pro academies from those places. That may explain why his favorite player is Cristiano Ronaldo. Jesse’s favorite team is a beauty – Juventus.

This is Jesse’s first full year as a starting Keeper in Div 1. He only did the switch post playing some indoor futsal as a Keeper.  He has not disappointed. He has been acknowledged as the team MVP on 3 occasions as voted on by his teammates. In a VISL Game of the Week earlier this year, Jesse was also acknowledged as the game MVP in a losing cause against Westcastle. He has had superior matches against Cowichan on 2 occasions and was highly responsible for stealing a point out of Sherman Rd. He also had a great match against Lakehill and preserved the win on a couple occasions in that upset. He is just a gamer and comes out to play.

It is pretty obvious that his family supports him quite a bit too. Married and has 2 kids, he was given a pass when his wife delivered their baby girl in September. He just finished calling his Coach to say he was not going to make it – his wife overheard this conversation, then she gave him the boot and he was able to get to Cowichan in time for the first game of the year.

Everything is not so cheery in the Rice household as Jesse is battling an illness and has been going through some treatments at the hospital on a regular basis. This would usually be enough to get people to step back from soccer– not Jesse. He is a little weaker physically at times, but he still shows up and gives his best, and is there for his soccer family.  Pretty amazing in itself.

Held in highest regards by his coaching staff and team, we wish him long and good health moving forward.

Besides picking up a new United Football long sleeved shirt, Jesse will also get a gift certificate for 1550’s, and bag from TeamSales.

Keep battling!!!
