You might not recognize this week’s Footballers of the Week by their jersey colours. Who wears grey jerseys?! The North franchise of the Vancouver Island Premier League (VIPL), which is Tier 2 youth soccer on the island is who wears grey!
The U14 boys North team also goes by the name Surf Soccer. They are a collaboration of the north zones in the LISA catchment system, so generally the team is made up of players from Saanich Fusion, Prospect Lake and Peninsula. They play in the VIPL against a LISA West and a LISA South team as well as teams from Upper Island North (Riptide) and Upper Island South (Storm).
The U14 North Surf Soccer team exemplifies what the clubs were hoping for with the redesign of VIPL this season. The cooperation from the club administrators and club technical directors has been tremendous. Coached by Sonny Pawar (PLSC) and Keith Grew (Fusion) have worked with the team under the philosophy of “develop to win”. By focusing on developing the players individually and as a team, the wins have come. Although it has not always been easy, the result is first in the standings with the lowest goals against with a big win over the second place Storm this past weekend.
In addition to the hard work the boys put in on the field, the admin believe a big part of their success has been the parents and their support for the new VIPL process and of course for all of their help driving! The team is looking forward to the second half of the season and we wish them much success.
Congratulations on being this week’s Footballers of the Week!
