The Vancouver Island Wave’s U14 & U16 boys’ soccer teams captured Provincial Premier Cup Championship titles on Saturday at Town Centre Stadium in Coquitlam in BC Premier Soccer League action.
The U14 boys, despite being down 1-0 five minutes into the game against Surrey United, rallied for three markers by Daniel Damian, Leo Sanchez and Nicholas Guildford in the second half to capture the Wave’s first boys’ title in club history.
After finishing third in league play, the U14s had to defeat Mountain United in penalty kicks and Coquitlam Metro-Ford in overtime to earn a berth in the league final against number one seeded Surrey United.
The U16 boys finished the season in 5th place but then defeated Coquitlam Metro-Ford and Mountain United to take the BCSPL Premier Cup.
The U13 Wave boys, after winning the regular season title, also faced Surrey United but ended up on the short end of a 2-1 result.
On Sunday the U18 girls also played in the provincial championship game and came away with silver after losing 1-0 to Coastal FC.
The VI Wave is a select group of the top soccer players from the Vancouver Island region. While most players come from the stretch between Campbell River to Victoria, there are also players from the far reaches of Powell River and Salt Spring Island who commit to this program which runs from August to June and feeds into Provincial, National and Whitecaps residency programs.
